Travel Consults: A New Revenue Opportunity
With vaccine season winding down, travel health consults are a great opportunity for pharmacies to generate additional revenue while helping patients prepare safely for international travel. Many patients seek guidance on recommended vaccines, medications (e.g., malaria prophylaxis), and destination-specific health risks.
Pharmacists can often provide these services, but scope varies by state. Some states allow independent prescribing, while others require a Collaborative Practice Agreement (CPA). Be sure to review your state’s regulations before offering services.
Training may also be required or recommended. An ACPE-approved option is the APhA Travel Health Services Certificate Program.
Most travel consults are cash-based, with patients willing to pay for convenience, though limited payer coverage may exist.
Workflow Services can support this offering through a customizable Clinical Visit Template (CVT), which can be tailored specifically for travel consult workflows and used to document encounters. Your Customer Success Manager has a sample Travel Consult CVT. Please reach out to them to learn more or see a demo.
Adding travel consults not only creates a new revenue stream but also expands your role as a trusted, accessible healthcare provider.
CAQH Profile: What It Is and Why It Matters
CAQH (Council for Affordable Quality Healthcare) is a system used by insurance companies to collect and verify provider information. Many payers require a CAQH profile for contracting. It’s a good idea to set aside some time to complete yours now.
The process is free and easy, but it can take 1–3 hours to complete. You can get started here. It’s best to gather your information ahead of time, including:
- Pharmacist license(s)
- NPI number
- Work history
- Education details
- Liability insurance information
- Practice locations
Once your profile is complete, you’ll need to re-attest (confirm your information is still correct) every 120 days. CAQH will send reminder emails - don’t ignore them, as failing to re-attest can delay or interrupt credentialing.
ECAPS: What Pharmacies Need to Know
The Equitable Community Access to Pharmacist Services (ECAPS) Act is proposed legislation that would allow pharmacists to be paid for certain healthcare services under Medicare Part B.
If passed, ECAPS would expand pharmacists’ ability to provide and bill for services like testing, treatment, and preventive care - especially during public health emergencies. This would be a major step toward recognizing pharmacists as providers at the federal level.
For pharmacies, this could mean:
- New reimbursement opportunities
- Expanded patient care services
- Greater integration into the healthcare system
Staying informed is key. You can follow updates here on the Workflow Services Podcast 'ECAPS Watch.'
While the bill has not yet passed, it has strong bi-partisan support and could significantly impact the future of pharmacy practice.
✨ Thank you for continuing to partner with Workflow Services. Together, we’re shaping the future of pharmacy care!
